Free Mental Health Counselling for Small Business

The Government has doubled funding for free mental health support to small business owners in order to assist them through the current COVID-19 pandemic and recent natural disasters.

An additional $4.6 million of funding has been given to Beyond Blue so they can boost their mental health program called NewAccess for Small Business Owners. A further $2.1 million will be given to Financial Counselling Australia so they can extend the Small Business Debt Helpline for 2022.

The NewAccess for Small Business Owners Program provides free, confidential, one-on-one mental health support via phone or video to small business owners, including sole traders. The coaches are former small business owners themselves, so they understand the unique challenges that small businesses face – including family and financial pressures.

The Small Business Debt Helpline is a free service for small business owners in financial difficulty. It supports small business owners to navigate issues including avoiding bankruptcy, negotiating payment plans, debt waivers, grant applications and insolvency.

More information about the NewAccess for Small Business Owners program is available by calling 1300 945 301 or on the Beyond Blue website.

Small business owners can contact the Small Business Debt Helpline by calling 1800 413 828 between 9am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday AEDT or visit their website.

New AADA Chair and Board Members

In November we were pleased to announce that the AADA Board elected David Blackhall as the Australian Automotive Dealer Association’s new Chairman, commencing his duties as an independent director following the AADA Annual General Meeting on 16 November 2021.

David has excellent industry experience through a long and successful career in the automotive industry. As the former CEO of the AADA (2016-2019), David also has extensive experience in working with the Government and industry. During his time as the AADA CEO, he made some significant gains for the AADA and its members. Since 2019, David has continued to provide valuable support to the AADA and its members as an independent consultant, supporting the AADA in its fight for better automotive franchising regulations.

Separately, the AADA also welcomed two new Directors to its Board. Edwina Gilbert, Executive Chair of the Phil Gilbert Motor Group, joined as a Director for New South Wales and David Reynolds, Managing Director of the Steinborner Automotive Group, is the Director for South Australia. Both Edwina and David have extensive experience in the automotive industry and have served on the Australian Motor Dealer Council.

We’d like to take the opportunity to acknowledge outgoing Chairman Terry Keating for his leadership and guidance over the past six years. Terry has played a significant role in making AADA the peak Dealer body in Australia, recognised by Dealers, other industry bodies, regulators, and the Government. Terry was instrumental in convincing the Dealer councils to commit to an adequate level of funding for the AADA. He has presided over several major achievements, including the hard-fought reforms to automotive franchising laws and the reversal of plans to allow for parallel imports of new vehicles to name a few.

Terry’s time as Chair comes on the back of a lifetime of service to the automotive industry including roles as the President of MTA-NSW, a director of the MTAA, Chair of the Ford National Dealer Council and Chairman of the BMW National Dealer Council.

ACCC Decision Does Not Vindicate General Motors

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced that it was concluding its investigation into General Motors conduct towards Dealers when withdrawing the Holden brand from Australia. The ACCC made it very clear that it was not investigating further because it did not want to prejudice the action other Holden Dealers were taking against GM. It also criticised GM for its treatment of its franchisors and for the damage it did to the Holden brand. The AADA released a statement saying that the ACCC’s decision does not vindicate GM.

Senator Deborah O’Neill, who chaired the inquiry into the treatment of Holden Dealers and brought changes into place, said in the Senate this week “This finding from the ACCC is in line with the findings of a bipartisan Senate report. The Senate carefully inquired and then castigated General Motors for their appalling treatment of the Holden Dealer network.”

Congratulations to Robert Reynen on 50 Years Service!

Congratulations to Robert ‘Snow’ Reynen on 50 years with the same Dealership, Clancy Ford, in Dubbo! Although the business has changed names, owners and locations over the years since he began there, Snow has been a constant feature of the servicing team. Snow started with Harold W Taylor and Son in 1971 as an apprentice technician, 1 week after finishing year 12 and the business has been Clancy Ford since 2010.

Robert’s dream Ford was a 1970 XW GT Phase 2 Falcon and the favourite Ford he owned was a XC Falcon S-Pack V8 Manual.

On Saturday 27th of November, past Dealer Principals and staff members joined current staff and Snow’s family for a surprise party to celebrate his special achievement at their annual Christmas party.

Vale Noel Gould

Sadly Noel Huxley Gould, a highly respected Holden Dealer passed away aged 83 suddenly earlier this week. When asked what made him choose a career in the automotive industry Noel once said:“It actually chose me. I was fresh out of school and crossing Federal Street in Rainbow, and Jack Strauss, the owner of Strauss Brothers – who became a wonderful friend and mentor of mine – approached me and said, ‘What are you doing next year, Noel?’ and I said, ‘I’m going to work for the Austin Dealer.’  He said ‘Bullshit.  He’s not much of a Dealer, come and see me.” And there began a 60+ year career as one of Australia’s iconic Holden Dealers, Noel Gould. Beginning his career in 1954 in Rainbow, Victoria, Noel Gould was a Holden man. Throughout a successful career he owned and operated nine Holden Dealerships across Australia along with a number of other dealerships and brands. His belief in the Dealer system saw him a leader in the Melbourne Holden Dealer Association and a strong advocate of the Holden brand. Asked what he thought was the most challenging aspect of running a dealership? He answered, “Finding the right people, nurturing them and getting them to do the things that they should do”. Noel believed the car industry provided enormous opportunity to those who were prepared to work hard, be disciplined, and cared about customers.  Noel Gould leaves a legacy of passionate and successful Dealers that he mentored through his long career. Our thoughts are with his family, his wife Marlene and children at this sad time.

Electric Vehicle Incentives per State

Governments around the world are subsidising electric vehicles or offering incentives to attract more electric vehicle (EV) buyers. Many car Manufacturers have already committed to switch to electric vehicles only in the next decades.

In Australia, electric vehicles are slowly gaining in popularity with 8,688 electric vehicles sold in the first half of 2021. In Australia, State Governments are taking the lead in encouraging the electric vehicle uptake. Most states offer concessions or exemptions on stamp duty and registrations, while some impose a tax to offset the loss of the fuel tax that goes to road maintenance.

The Electric Vehicle Council recently released its “State of Electric Vehicles report” which includes a scorecard which rates each state based on its holistic policy environment for electric vehicles and the development of policy actions over the last twelve months.

The AADA has put together the below visual guide to help you understand what incentives your State Government is offering for drivers to take up EVs.
