EV & Hybrid Vehicle Wave 2 Insights Report

The EV & Hybrid Vehicle Wave 2 Insights Report is the second wave of tracking EV sentiments across the community following a similar study conducted in December 2022, collecting feedback from a sample of 2,000 Australian drivers (representative by age, gender and household location across Australia).

Among the survey findings are:

  • The proportion of the market open to buying an EV has grown but represents only one in four buyers, as the strongest barrier to considering an EV remains the higher purchase price.
  • Two thirds tell us they’re going to keep their current vehicle for longer than initially planned due to cost of living pressures.
  • Three in five say that they’re less open to paying more for EVs due to cost of living pressures.
  • Respondents open to buying an EV for their main vehicle has grown from 21% in 2022 to 25% in 2024.
  • Consumers are more likely to be intending on replacing their main vehicle in the next 3 years (61%, up from 53%).
  • The price premium consumers are willing to pay for an EV over a traditional fuel type is 8% up from 6%.
  • More than two-thirds believe governments should be incentivising more customers to transition to EVs.
  • 57% are not open to an EV due to perception that EVs cost too much, but this is down from 62%.
  • 62% of respondents say their next purchase will be a SUV or a Ute.

EV & Hybrid Vehicle Insights Report

This research sought to canvas views and experiences of Australian drivers across some particular areas relating to current behaviours and future vehicle intentions, including;

  • The type of vehicle they currently drive (body style, age, fuel type);
  • Their willingness to purchase an electric vehicle when replacing any of their current household vehicles;
  • Specific perspectives on electric and hybrid vehicles (willingness to consider, drivers/barriers of consideration and price point analysis);
  • Attitudes towards EVs and the role of individuals in driving uptake.

The goal of this research was to understand the status quo of mindset and mood around EVs. While there is plenty of industry and Government talk around future policy-setting and transitioning to EVs, it’s important to gain a reliable and representative view from drivers themselves.

To do this, feedback was collected from a sample of 2,000 Australian drivers (representative by age, gender and household location across Australia). The results from this stage of research are detailed in this document.

AADA Stats Book 2021

The inaugural AADA Stats Book, released in March 2022, marked a significant step in consolidating key data and insights for Australia’s franchised new car dealer network. Drawing on figures from the 2021 calendar year, the report brought together a comprehensive review of new vehicle sales, findings from the ABS Motor Vehicle Census, and a detailed breakdown of brand and dealership sales performance. This edition offered an industry-first snapshot of the broader economic and operational environment in which dealers operate.

In what would later fall under the banner of ‘DealerNomics’, this publication delivered clear and accessible statistics to help dealers, policymakers, and stakeholders understand the scale and value of Australia’s retail automotive sector. As the first publication of its kind by AADA, the 2021 edition laid the groundwork for future benchmarking and policy advocacy.
