LVT EV UPDATE #5

LVT EV CATEGORY IMPLEMENTATION DELAYED UNTIL 1 SEPTEMBER 2026
This communication is to advise you that the Department has decided to delay the implementation of the LVT EV Category.
The LVT EV Category will now be implemented on 1 September 2026.
This extension of time has been granted after receiving feedback from industry and will allow Licensed Vehicle Testers additional time to complete the required training and submit their applications.
LVTs are advised to continue working toward completing all the required steps to have the EV category added to their Licence so they will be ready when the new implementation date arrives.
The steps to have the EV Category added to your LVT Licence are per below:
EV Category Application Process
1. Successfully complete the pre-requisite training
- Examining Mechanics who wish to test and inspect electric and hybrid vehicles for the purpose of issuing certificates of roadworthiness must have completed one of the following pre-requisite courses:

- AURETH101 – Depower and reinitialise battery electric vehicles; or
- AURETH011 – Depower and reinitialise hybrid electric vehicles
- This pre-requisite training is a nationally accredited course and is delivery by a vast range of RTOs across Australia.
- You will be issued with a certificate upon the completion of this training and it must specify one of the above course codes.You will be required to provide us a copy of this certificate.
2. Successfully complete the LVT EV Awareness training
- The LVT EV Awareness training is being delivered online by our RTO training partners. You can find out more information on their websites.
- You will be issued with a certificate upon the completion of this LVT accreditation training. You will be required to provide us a copy of this certificate.
3. Purchase mandatory equipment
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) metre which is capable of detecting 35 parts per million (ppm) of carbon monoxide in the air.
- Thermal Imaging Camera which is capable of detecting temperatures between 20°C and 400°C.
- All mandatory equipment for the LVT EV Category is listed in Appendix 5 of the LVT Licence Conditions.
4. Submit application for EV Category
- You can submit your application using this link – LVT EV Category Online Application.
- When submitting this application, it is important to ensure the correct information is uploaded. If incomplete or incorrect information is uploaded, the application will not be assessed and we will email you to advise that you will be required to submit a new application with all the correct and required information.
- You will be required to upload copies of the certificates of completion for the pre-requisite course and the LVT EV awareness course.
- You will be required to provide information about your equipment (CO Meter and Thermal Imaging Camera) and upload images as evidence of having them available.
